Core, Supporting, and Generic Subdomains

Where to spend your senior engineers — and where not to.

Theory

Not all subdomains deserve the same investment:

  • Core — the reason the business exists. Build, don't buy.
  • Supporting — necessary but not differentiating. Build cheaply, or buy.
  • Generic — every business needs it (auth, billing). Buy. Always.

Misallocating effort here is one of the most expensive architectural mistakes.

Reflect

For your current product, list 3 subdomains.

  • Which is Core? Are your best people working on it?
  • Which is Generic and *not* bought-in? Why?
